Amazon Greenlights Life is Strange Live-Action Series

After nearly a decade of attempts, Life is Strange is finally being adapted into a live-action TV series at Amazon Prime Video. The critically acclaimed 2015 narrative adventure game from Square Enix and Dontnod Entertainment will be reimagined for television, with Charlie Covell (The End of the F**ing World, Kaos*) serving as showrunner.

The adaptation is being produced by Story Kitchen, alongside Square Enix, LuckyChap, and Amazon MGM Studios. Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson are attached as executive producers, with Covell leading the creative direction.

A Cultural Touchstone Brought to TV

“Life is Strange deserved to be more than just a game—it’s a cultural touchstone,” Story Kitchen said in a statement. “After a decade-long journey, we’re honored to be bringing this beloved story to Amazon MGM alongside our incredible partners.”

The series will directly adapt the first game’s story, following Max Caulfield, a photography student who discovers she can rewind time after saving her childhood friend, Chloe Price. Together, they unravel the mystery behind a missing student while facing choices that alter the course of their lives forever.

Future Potential for the Series

If Season 1 adapts the first game in full, Amazon has multiple paths forward. The show could continue Max’s journey from Life is Strange: Double Exposure (2024) or branch into other entries in the franchise:

  • Life is Strange 2 (focusing on the Diaz brothers)
  • Life is Strange: True Colors (starring Alex Chen)
  • Life is Strange: Before the Storm (a prequel exploring Chloe Price)

The franchise also includes spin-offs like The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit and a collection of graphic novels, offering plenty of material for Amazon’s adaptation.

Amazon’s Expanding Game Adaptations

The Life is Strange adaptation joins Amazon’s growing lineup of video game-inspired projects, including Tomb Raider, God of War, Wolfenstein, and Warhammer 40,000. The streamer is also preparing to release Fallout Season 2 later this year, continuing its push into blockbuster gaming IPs.
